TRACES AND SIGNS OF THIS TIME

My job is not totally casual; there is a preparatory phase that starts from an idea or a ‘trail’, a sort of basic planning (a thought, an idea, a sketch on a sheet of paper…). When I start the work I have already decided what to do but I do not know what the result will be until I take away and/or reinterpret the material (privation/containment/recovery/reprocessing) with the aim of pursuing sobriety and concreteness.

Perhaps my idea of taking away… simplifying…. could in a certain sense be defined as ‘classical’… according to the intuition of George Steiner ‘classical’ refers to works which, through aesthetic experience, are able to speak to us regardless of the circumstances in which we live … By its very ‘alchemy’ a classic work, whether it be a painting, a novel or a piece of music, dialogues constantly with the human being.

This removing is a part of the pictorial process I chose to adopt, as well as the use of the wood that I incorporate in my works, which besides being purer … is ideal for this type of application…. creating a play of effects on various levels… of colours that are first hidden and then brought out or removed… thus the pictorial material is not discarded but reintroduced in a raw and casual way into the work.. . Minorcan red earth element as a sign of natural recognition.

The works in my series ‘Tracce e segni di questo tempo’ (traces and signs of our time) represent my way of seeing the reality of modern times, which are characterized by radical mutations, including in our lifestyle. Elimination represents the ‘privation’ and ‘containment’ that I believe may be one of the possible solutions in these times of crisis, the profound crisis of values and lack of ethics… an under stress global time in which social imbalances are increasing… where uncertainties prevent us from planning our basic future needs… a time characterized by the flight of peoples and their right to seek happiness… a time when the effects of natural abuse and disaster are increasingly manifest; a time… of compromises that continue to go round and round without managing/succeeding/wanting/knowing how to find simple, linear ways out. A line of paint runs away from the vortex and out of the canvas… an endless line… a simple way out… a postponement.
